Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said Wednesday that his league has been discussing the possibility of adding a 10th team - especially if an addition would strengthen the league's recent push for a revamped BCS system.
Thompson, speaking at the Mountain West media days outside Las Vegas, said expansion is discussed in nearly every meeting of league directors, but they haven't gotten into specifics.

I would say that they should get Fresno State. Boise State is only going to leave to go to the Pac-10. They could eventually expand to 12. To do that they would probably have to go after Houston and UTEP. I am not sure that would do anything for them, though. It would also lead to more craziness throughout all conferences.
Boise State in the PAC -10 about slim a nd none and slim took the last train out of town!
By they I am refering to the Mountain West in that sense. The Pac-10 could also expand to 12, in which case it would probably be Utah and Boise State. The Mountain West could go with Fresno State, UTEP, and perhaps Tulsa all things being equal or other teams if they wanted to do that.
Boise State's chances of going to the PAC-10 are slim and none! Slim took the last train out of town!
I'm sure the Mountain West would like to expand, but the pickings are slim. My guess is that academcis will be a big part of the decision process for the new school if they ever expand.
As for Fresno St., that would give the MWC the Central California Valley, a very good recruiting area, and a solid fan base when schools travel there.
I hope Boise St isn't holding their breath for a PAC-10 invite. Their tv market, and stadium size, along with academics is far from what the PAC-10 would be looking for.
The school that might be the suprise invite just might be SMU. Yes, that's right, SMU.
The SMU higher ups are working very hard, and are committed to get their football program turned around, and to make it a success. Hiring June Jones was a big first step in that direction.
With the addition of SMU, this would allow the MWC to double down in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metro-plex area. Due to many people relocating to Texas for the low taxes and job growth, Dallas is now the fifth largest tv market in the U.S. The Dallas-Ft. Worth area is one of the best recruiting grounds in the U.S.
SMU's Cox School of Business is recognized as a business education leader by BusinessWeek, The Economist, Financial Times, Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, and The Wall Street Journal.
SMU has a top ranked school of law, and are ranked in the top ten in highest SAT scores.
The endowment of SMU is in the neighborhood of $1.35 billion. Not many schools have endowments north of a billion.
If the MWC expands, my money says it will be SMU.
It will be very interesting to see if they expand to possibly more than 10 teams. They are certainly in a position to attract the interest of several different teams.
If they get SMU, they then might get more schools in Texas to get to 12 to have a championship game. Houston and Rice might be those schools. Rice would fit the academic part of it. I am not sure that would do much for the Mountain West in their BCS hopes, but it might get them greater exposure.
I don't think that Boise State would ever really have a chance to get in the Pac-10. I do think, however, that would be the only place that they would leave to go. They would not go to the Mountain West because it would just be a stepping stone to get into the Pac-10. They would probably want to make the jump in one fell swoop.
This Boise State talk to the PAC-10 is just plain silly. They want to go to the MWC which is the best they can get into.
Boise State already got rejected by the Mountain West. The Mountain West will not go to ten teams unless it will get them into the BCS automatically. It will be tough to do that due to the fact that, outside of the Mountain West conference, there are not that many high quality non-BCS programs. They will probably look to get further into Texas if those programs show sustained success, such as Houston, SMU, and possibly Rice. Those are all old Southwest Conference schools that will look to get back into big time football. That is the next move that MIGHT be made.
Boise State to PAC-10, one man's delusion!
A better chance for Boise State might be to join the Big 12 if it ever loses any teams because that conference has never gotten into Idaho and it would create an interesting rivalry with its old coach, Dan Hawkins!!
BYU & Utah to the Pac 10.
What are you smoking Brice? Boise State to the Big 12 is another delusion! The MWC is Boise State's only option! Idaho is hardly a market the big boys are looking at or will ever look at! Get some smelling salts and wake up!
Utah is the only school that has the chops to get into the PAC-10. BYU still has the Sunday issue not to mention academic issues. Colorado would be the only other school to fit the PAC-10 criteria but they seem satisfied in the Big-12.
Utah would be the first choice, probably. BYU might have some problems with not being able to play on Sunday. That would probably be the only issue. The Mountain West would then be left scrambling to replace them.
I don't know that Boise State would ever get into the Big XII. But if they were to lose a team, they could be considered. Utah is the first choice of the Pac-10, and then they might look at Fresno State if the Bulldogs can get their academics in order. They seem to be making steps to do that.
Nathan, the Big 12 will not lose a team. If it did Boise St doesn't have a chance. It is too far away, Idaho doesn't even border a single Big 12 team. The choices for your scenario would be Arkansas, TCU, and Colorado State. Tx - San Antonio and Texas State have a better chance than Boise.
The Big XII has ten solid locks that probably will never leave. Colorado and Baylor are the only schools that have a chance to ever leave. Colorado MIGHT leave if the Pac-10 came calling, but that is a long shot. Baylor would only leave because they would have a problem keeping up with everyone else. Arkansas would probably be the only team to even consider leaving the SEC. I thought South Carolina might fit that profile, but I have since backed off that. TCU and Colorado State would be looking to make a serious move up to a BCS conference. They might also consider Houston and SMU. This is the way that it is done in the 21st Century. Get with the program!!
Good comments! We know one thing: the Pac 10 is only going to expand if it provides a benefit to them. There were (2) schools in the 90's that they discussed expansion with that fit that bill: Texas and Colorado. Expansion didn't happen. There could be a time, one day, when the Pac 10 might look to the Utah market, but that time isn't now. So BSU might leave the WAC...but it will be to the MWC...only if it's in the best interest of the MWC. They added TCU as the 9th team so that they had balanced football scheduling and the Dallas market. They will only add a 10th team if they get a BCS bid out of it.
Thanks for siding with me, Matt.
MWC adds UTEP, Boise and Fresno (C-USA takes La Tech. to replace UTEP)
New MWC:
Mtn Div: NM, AF, CSU, WYO, UTEP, TCU
Wst Div: BYU, UT, UNLV, SDSU, Fres, Boise
Champ game in Phoenix.
Guranteed BCS bid.
Not quite
Pac 10 adds Utah, Fresno St or Hawaii, and the name Pac 10.
__
MWC adds Boise St to replace Utah, UTEP, Houston, SMU
MWC Northern Div: Boise St., UNLV, BYU, UNM, AF, CSU, WYO
MWC Southern Div: UTEP, TCU, SMU, Houston, Rice, SDSU
Champ game in Vegas and BCS auto-bid
__
WAC/Conference USA:
Picks up North Texas (plays at Cowboys stadium), new football programs at Texas St. & UT San Antonio (will be playing in Alamodome.
___
Big 10: Norte Dame or Rutgers (NYC TV marjet & Paterno's pick)
Big East: Norte Dame or BC return or UCF (for USF match up)
LONGEST SHOT:
Texas/OK conference:
Texas, UNT (plays at new cowboys stadium), Houston, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas Tech, A&M, UTEP, OU, OK State, UT San Antonio, Texas State, Tulsa
Champ game rotates: AlamoDome, New Cowboys Stadium
TV markets: Dallas, Houston, Austin-San Antonio, El Paso-Las Cruces, all of Oklahoma.
You can discuss all of these possibilities, and probably none of them will ever happen.
Rumors (and just that):
Old Southwest Conference (similar to outlined above):
UT, A&M, Houston, Rice, SMU, TCU, Tech, Baylor with adds of OU, OK State, & Tulsa - UTSA and Texas State are too much of a reach.
With the reemergence of TCU and Houston, the SWC could regain its stature and have 5 Top 20 teams every year. The north division of Big 12 has been rumored to lose one or both Iowa schools and/or Missouri. Colorado to the Pac 10. Nebraska doesn't have the luster it once did.
May be a dream - but I like it.
You are summoning Fleetwood Mac waaaay too much there.
