whats up man UTPA fired Tom Schuberth who are they going after? Call Ricky Vaughn,,,

Anonymous said...

Georgia is going to embarrass themselves, if they think that that pool is realistic. Anderson, Capel, Gaudio, Stevens, etc are not going to consider leaving their comfortable spots for that dead-end job. They'd be wise to get Anthony Grant before Alabama signs him.

Anonymous said...

Georgia has fallen way behind the rest of the SEC in basketball and it's time they kick it into overdrive once in-for-all.

They need to make strong inquiries into...

Virginia Tech Head Coach, Seth Greenberg.

Davidson Head Coach, Bob McKillop.

Xavier Head Coach, Sean Miller.

North Carolina Assistant Head Coach, C.B. McGrath. McGrath been on Roy Williams staffs for nine years in Kansas and in North Carolina.

That's called a good start.

ricky said...

Bob McKillop is about to croak. If they want a long term solution, they'd stay far away from him.

Anonymous said...

I'd bet Mike Muse (Wake Asst.) is a candidate for the Appy State job. Jim Corrigan (ODU assistant) may also be a candidate for that position.

Here's Jeff Goodman's take on potential "hot" coaches who could be the next Bruce Pearl...guys who make a run and turn it into a "power" conference job.
Potential Bruce Pearls

chowertime said...

why in the world would sean miller leave xavier or dino guadio leave wake? and tom izzo or rick pitino to arizona? is that a joke?

Matt Peloquin said...

Does someone really need to answer your question? Money! Not enough? New challenge. Resources to build a winner. We're talking about Arizona, not Northern Arizona, not Arizona St. The interest Arizona has in these coaches is based their level of expectation. And just because a school has interest in a coach, making them a potential candidate, it doesn't mean that the coach is a candidate with an interview lined up. It interesting how each year there are people who rely too much on logic and not enough on what's really going on. I recall a couple years ago, there were people saying "why on earth would Roy Williams leave a legendary program like Kansas, fresh of a trip to the Final, to go to UNC? UNC is a great job and he went there, but you don't leave a program like Kansas!". We saw how that played out.

Matt Peloquin said...

I just added a section of candidate called "contract coaches". These are coaches who have just signed new contracts or are in the process of doing so.

With what we saw last year from Travis Ford (interviews at Providence, turns it down to sign a new contract at UMass, but then leaves days later to take the Oklahoma St job), I'm not going to completely remove a coach just because they signed a contract.

Buzz Peterson was let go to soon...his record speaks for itself, program builder, graduates players...selling himself short if he does nt pursue Georgia/UVA. Had the Georiga job locked up until crooked Harrick muddied the deal.

Matt Peloquin said...

One could argue with your assessment about Buzz:

Here was Tennessee's record from 1997-2001 before Buzz left Tulsa to replace Jerry Green at Tennessee:

Year/Records/Conference/Postseason
1997-98 Tennessee 20-9 9-7 3rd SEC East NCAA 1st Round
1998-99 Tennessee 21-9 12-4 1st SEC East NCAA 2nd Round
1999-00 Tennessee 26-7 12-4 1st SEC East NCAA Sweet Sixteen
200-01 Tennessee 22-11 8-8 4th SEC East NCAA 1st Round

Then Buzz came in:

Year/Records/Conference/Postseason
2001–2002 Tennessee 15–16 7–9
2002–2003 Tennessee 17–12 9–7 NIT 1st Round
2003–2004 Tennessee 15–14 7–9 NIT 1st Round
2004–2005 Tennessee 14–17 6–10

One could argue he got too much time at Tennessee.

Pat Kelsey at High Point. Mark it down.

Arizona is a great job! Arizona has led the PAC-10 in attendance for years! AD Livengood has people contacting him about the job. Arizona has a lot better climate than East Lansing, Pittsburg or Spokane! Arizona will land a big name coach becasue thats what the job requires! Arizona has the resources to get the job done regarding a coach. Ticket prices went up for next season, so Pitino, Izzo, and Dixon are on the radar screen! Chowertime needs to take a cold shower and wake up!

Matt Peloquin said...

I agree about Arizona being a great program. So I could see why an aggressive courtship of a top coach, such as the ones already being discussed, makes sense.

The key though is that what is Arizona going to be like without Lute? There are some programs that when the job opens up, coaches line up to take it (Kentucky). This is usually due to proof that the program exists beyond a single coach and that regardless of who is running the program, the fans will come. Then there are programs in the past that were great at one point, lost their coach to another job, and the programs disappeared.

Any chance Jim O'Brien, the ex Ohio St, ex BC coach gets another shot somewhere. I always thought he was one of the best X and o coaches in the country.

Matt Peloquin said...

One thing to consider about the Kentucky situation: Anthony Grant probably shouldn't be accepting any jobs until Donovan official says he's not interested in Kentucky since Grant would be his replacement at Florida.

Matt Peloquin said...

The Jim O'Brien situation was an interesting one. He broke the rules but the story behind why he did so seemed to actually swing people his direction. Fast forward some time and he won his lawsuit. You'd think enough time has passed for him to coach again.

I'm sure it's the Boston University opening that triggered the JO'B thoughts since he coached at BC. I'd like to see JO'B back, albeit BU (unlikely), the MAAC or NEC.

Anonymous said...

Orlando Vandross should get the BU job. He is a great recruiter, the players love him and he is a good game manager and X's and O's coach.

BU will go for the big name, but the best name is already under contract with them...

Anonymous said...

Matt,

Regarding Arizona. No one will replace Lute but a top name coach that can pull in top flight recruits will keep Arizona on top! Unlike Los Angeles and the Bay area, Tucson is a college town and the residents live and die for Arizona BB! Look at the football team, they have struggled a lot but have averaged over 50,000 in attendance for years! The U. of A. is the only game in town and has no pro sports to worry about. I don't think U. of a. will fall off much in attendance! UCLA, on the other hand even with a winning program has a hard time filling up Pauley which is about 2,000 seats smaller than McKale. That's what Livengood wants a name coach to keep filing up McKale and continue to be the leader in PAC-10 attendance. The ticket prices were increased to be able to pay for a top coach.

Anonymous said...

how come no love for kevin o'neill, he has a great deal of experience and huge resume, he should at least get a lower level BCS type job, maybe one of these jobs that opens up after the big ones get filled

Matt Peloquin said...

Kevin O'Neil got his shot at Arizona with Lute and it didn't work out. Remember, Lute brought him in to be his successor and it didn't work out. Other programs will remember that. But I do think a lesser "BCS" program could look at him, someone of the caliber of Baylor if Drew were to leave.

Anonymous said...

O' Neil was a disaster at U. of A.! He has no chance at U. of A.! There are a lot more positive vibes about Pennell but he won't get the job either! A big name coach will get the U. of A. job but we won't hear anything until the tournament is over!

Anonymous said...

Shaka Smart is also in the mix for the VCU job.

Anonymous said...

How come some of the hot young assistants at the big progrmas aren't being name or considered for these jobs. It really seems odd that ADs cont to recycle these old coaches that dont win. Find a program with a winning head coach and start to pluck at their talented assistants- (i.e.- Memphis has Josh Pastuer and Orlando Antigua, Louisville has Richard Pitino, Duke has Collins, etc)

Anonymous said...

What about Ernie Kent for any of these open jobs? I hear he's swell recruiter, graduates his players, sends a lot of them to the NBA and has two Elite Eight runs at Oregon.

Anonymous said...

What's the story with Kent? Is he really going to be able to keep his job?

Matt Peloquin said...

If Kent weren't going to return next year, ou would think Oregon would have done something by now rather than wait for all the other jobs to be filled. Kent was in play for the Michigan job not long ago, so he's a commodity....looks like he'll be around for another year.

But if Oregon makes a move, it is pretty much a one name list: Mark Few. He's an Oregon alum and with the Nike money could turn them into a powerhouse.

Anonymous said...

I have a question, what about Billy Gillespie I mean he turned around UTEP and Texas A&M why isn't he listed as a candidate for any of these jobs

Matt Peloquin said...

Gillespie wasn't an early candidate since he still had a job. But while he's not on a list here yet, there is an SEC school reported to have interest in him. There's also the matter of his "contract". He's owed 6 million but it's not in easy writing so it might take time to figure out.

Who will be the next coach at North Florida?

Anonymous said...

Virginia is going to hire Tony Bennett.

Anonymous said...

does anyone see Dave Leitao coaching next year?
He is a very good coach who got a bad deal at UVA.

Anonymous said...

The North Florida job is a tough one. The academic criteria for players is higher than the rest of the Atlantic Sun...with some bandit schools in that league, it will not be easy to win. As far as Kevin O'neil is concerned, this guy must have photos of people. He is a bad person...period.

Anonymous said...

Smart is going to be offered the VCU job.

Anonymous said...

O'Neil is the Woodie Hayes of Basketball! He is a bad person and does not seem to know how to relate to kids that play for him! Any school that would offer him a job would have rocks in their head!

Anonymous said...

whats the deal on Butch Pierre Oklahoma State Assist. Good assistant and great recruiter

Anonymous said...

Few to Arizona is going to happen...will the Zags hire from within?

heff02 said...

McKay is leaving Liberty to be an assistant at UVa.

Anonymous said...

Hampton's Nickelberry has also resigned.

Anonymous said...

Is Nevada coach Mark Fox a candidate for either the Arizona or Washington State jobs

Matt Peloquin said...

No, Fox is not a candidate.

Anonymous said...

Mark my word...some schools are going to be kicking their AD in the butt in a couple of years for not hiring RUSS PENNELL ! His knowledge of how to coach the game, charisma, recruiting abilities are alot like that guy Kentucky just hired. Question for everyone...how many Interim Coaches have taken a Div.1 NCAA Team to the Sweet 16...do a little research...I dare you ! RT

Anonymous said...

Rivals.com is reporting Sean Miller has told Memphis he is not interested. Our AD has a story in the Cincinnati Enquirer today acknowledging that UVA and Arizona have also contacted him about interest of which he had none.
The only 'carousel' move that worries me this offseason in relation to keeping Sean at X, is Jamie Dixon leaving Pitt.

Matt Peloquin said...

Well, Fox was indeed a candidate and got a pretty good job. Interesting move to the east for him. I thought he'd be a name we'd hear with Pac-10 jobs like WSU, or Oregon...perhaps even Arizona. But Georgia? Interesting indeed.

Matt Peloquin said...

I will add this about Fox...WSU better be all set with Ken Bone. Because that's the only reason why Fox shouldn't have gotten looked at seriously by Washington St. His style of play in the Pac-10 would have been just what WSU needed to maintain success.

Matt Peloquin said...

4/09/09:

Slow day but it's worth noting that former Arizona coach Russ Pennell was hired today at D2 school, Grand Canyon University.

It's hard to believe that there wasn't a D1 program at some level that would hire him. Especially with a few schools such as Seattle U still open. Dunlap went the other route: become an assistant at Oregon, knowing he'll have a good shot at taking over if Kent is fired and Few rejects the school again.

Anonymous said...

Matt,

Actually the Grand Canyon University job is not as bad as it seems. Grand Canyon is going division 1 (next year I beleive) and Phoenix is Pennell's hometown! I was surprised to see that the enrollment at Grand Canyon is 15,000 and there are plans to build a 6,000 arena. This may be a place where Pennell can put his stamp on the program as he leads it into D-1. Do you think the West Coast Conference or the Big West Conference may be interested in adding Grand Canyon in the future? That being said, I'm a bit surprised that a D-1 program didn't hire Pennell like Seattle University.

Anonymous said...

I pray and hope Billy Gillespie gets into a head coaching position and prospers. KY did him so wrong and dirty. Billy deserves better and will get better.

Grand Canyon cannot start the move up to Division 1 until 2011-2012. They will not be fully eligible for several years after that, if they get eligible.
